Record Growth of Access to the Torino 2006 Website !

Jan 5 2006  United States at the very Top with the Highest Number of Hits

The Games are fast approaching and the fever is running high on the net. The official website of the Organising Committee for the XX Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games www.torino2006.org ended the year 2005 with a flying colours, with a staggering increase in the number of hits and page views and the portal dedicated to the Olympic Torch Relay www.fiammaolimpica.it having had a significant increase since the day of the lighting of the Flame.

The numbers speak for themselves, with 900,000 hits a month, compared to the 600,000 of the previous month, and more than 5 million page views. With 30,000 hits a day, the visitors of the Olympic portal could fill up the Olympic Stadium of Torino on a daily basis. The day with the highest amount of traffic was December 28th, as all eyes were set on Alpine Skiing (for the downhill on the Stelvio), on Biathlon (World Cup) and on Hockey (for the rosters of the Olympic teams).

Here is a breakdown of the data relating to where the accesses come from: a drop in the percentage of hits coming from Italy (12% compared to 17% of the previous month) seems to be compensated by a remarkable growth in favour of the great Olympic enthusiasts, the Americans (above all the Californians), who have decided to postpone the Night of the Oscar Awards until March in order to be able to enjoy the eagerly awaited winter games as TV viewers or via the Internet. The percentage of hits on the website of the Games in the three language versions is recording a 75% percent traffic for what concerns the access to the English version, while the remaining 25% is divided between the Italian and French version.

Among the most visited sections of the institutional website, much of the interest is focused on the areas of “Competitions and Schedules”, “Sports and Athletes”, “Tickets”, “Calendar”, “Ceremonies”, “Photo Gallery” and on service information such as “Transport”, “Competition facilities”, “Accommodation”. There is a stable interest in the news sector, weather, and in the TV programmes of the European broadcasting stations on winter sports.

With regards to the Olympic Flame website, www.fiammaolimpica.it, it has doubled its visits compared to the previous month (121,000/month), and trebled its page views (552,834), with a peak on the day of the lighting of the Flame in Rome (December 8th). On the rise are also the visits to the two community websites Education and Volunteers and the e-commerce website www.olympicstore.it (on average + 20%-25%).

Finally, on February 1st, the official Games Time website, which offers some brand new features for Internet surfers, will be unveiled. The new technological infrastructure implemented by Telecom Italia, main sponsor of the XX Olympic Winter Games, was designed in order to support the traffic load expected during the Games, with access peaks estimated at up to 30 million visitors. In the pipeline are also new exciting colours of the graphics Look of the Games and real time results starting from the first day of competitions, on February 11th. The editorial section will be enhanced with the news service, carried out by the Agency Reuters, while the homepage will feature different contributions every hour, with further details on the winners of the Olympic medals and stories about the key players of Torino 2006. Comments on the medals won and analyses conducted by experts in the Olympic winter sports will accompany the end of the Olympic day at around midnight.
